The Owners
Mark and Gretchen, the owners of The Alpine Meat and Wurst House in Honesdale, PA, have a unique story that reflects their passion for their craft. Mark’s journey began when he worked alongside his father Klaus his whole life, learning the trade and honing his skills. He also apprenticed with other butchers in Germany and New Jersey to expand his knowledge of the industry.
In 2008, Mark took over the reins of The Alpine Meat and Wurst House when Klaus retired. It was then that he met Gretchen, who would later become an integral part of the business. In 2011, Gretchen started helping out at the shop by making apple strudels – a specialty dessert that has become a customer favorite. Over time, she began to help in all departments and now does all the secretarial work as well.
Together, Mark and Gretchen have continued to uphold the tradition of excellence that The Alpine Meat and Wurst House is known for. Their commitment to quality is evident in every product they make, from their handcrafted sausages to their delectable baked goods. They take pride in using only the best ingredients sourced from trusted suppliers and preparing everything by hand with care.

Awards
The Alpine has earned multiple awards from the American Association of Meat Processors for their authentic German meats. Help at the University of Wisconsin, the AAMP invites judges from Germany to come for the competition. After winning in multiple awards in 2016 and 2019 Mark and his father, Klaus, were invited to Germany to receive their medals at the German Butcher’s Association award ceremony. Bauernwurst
Our traditional German sausage made from pork and beef delicately seasoned with mustard seeds and celery.
Franks All Beef Skinless
All beef skinless Frank, traditionally seasoned with garlic.
Bratwurst
Made from the freshest cuts of Pork and Veal. Seasoned to perfection with fresh chives, leeks and lemon.
Krainerwurst
Spicy sausage similar to kielbasa made from Pork and Beef blended with ground black pepper and garlic.
Braunschweiger Liverwurst
Liver and Pork sausage, a sliceable cold cut. Great on sandwiches.
Liver Spread
Our decadent Pork liverwurst spread, soft spreadable texture, similar to pate' and is read to eat. Also known as Schmier Liverwurst.
Franks Pork & Beef Natural Skin
Traditional Pork and Beef hotdogs with natural casing.
Weisswurst
A mild combination of Veal and pork seasoned with chives and lemon.
Founding & History
Klaus and Ingrid, the founders of The Alpine Meat and Wurst House in Honesdale, PA, have a rich history that reflects their passion for their German heritage. Klaus built the shop in 1977, 45 years ago, with the goal of bringing traditional German meat products to the United States. He and Ingrid worked tirelessly to make The Alpine Meat and Wurst House what it is today – a beloved destination for foodies and meat lovers alike.
Both Klaus and Ingrid were born in Germany and take great pride in their heritage. They wanted to share their traditions with others by offering authentic German meat products made with only the best ingredients. Their commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of their business, from handcrafting sausages to smoking meats slowly over hardwoods.
In 2004, they expanded the business by designing a restaurant within part of the building. This allowed customers to not only purchase their products but also enjoy them on-site. The restaurant has become a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, featuring classic German dishes such as schnitzel and sauerbraten.
